The Hill’s 12:30 Report — Inauguration edition: Trump sworn in as 45th president | Vows to give power ‘back to the American people’ | Protesters smash windows in downtown | What it’s like in DC right now
A DAY FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS: Donald Trump took the oath of office on Friday as the 45th president of the United States (!!), pledging to embark on “a great national effort to rebuild this country and restore its promise for the American people.” Big line: “We are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to the American people,” he said. “Washington flourished but the people did not prosper in its wealth.” http://bit.ly/2jHrig6
Another big line: “When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.” http://bit.ly/2jVoLMR
Ending line: “Make America Great Again!”
Speech length: 16 minutes http://bit.ly/2iK4oFO
The rain: Right as President Trump began his remarks, the rain started.

Well guys, it happened! Donald J. Trump has been officially inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States. I’m Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what’s coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@digital-staging.thehill.com, @CateMartel and on Facebook.
IT’S MADNESS. MADNESS, I TELL YOU!: Washington, D.C., has been taken over by supporters and protesters. But except for downtown D.C. near the Capitol and White House, the entire city is a ghost town. Lots of businesses and offices are closed and from the locals I’ve talked to, the plan is to stay put inside and wait for the festivities to subside. Let’s set the scene for you:
ON THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN D.C.:
Yikes, things are escalating — window smashing: Some anti-Trump protesters have started to smash windows on the streets, including a limo: http://bit.ly/2kaS8hy
Reporter, down. Reporter, down: “Washington Post reporter Dalton Bennett thrown to the ground by riot police.” Video: http://bit.ly/2jVeksM
Put me in, coach!: You know when you go to a baseball game, there are lots of little kids in the team’s uniform and their baseball gloves — ready to go just in case the team is short and needs him or her to jump in? That’s the exact vibe I’m getting from college-aged Trump supporters in suits, red ties and American flag pins — just in case the administration needs them. Put me in, coach!

Metro last night/this morning: Spooky, eerily quiet. There are many more cops/military than regular people. Photo: http://bit.ly/2kaJ4cJ
Metro throwing some shade: WMATA tweeted: “Metro Ridership: As of 11am, 193k trips taken so far today. (11am1/20/13 = 317k, 11am 1/20/09 = 513k, 11am 1/20/05 = 197k)” http://bit.ly/2jxqicf

How the police are feeling: “Protesters chant ‘this is what a police state looks like’ as bored D.C. police tolerate the shutdown of an entrance to the parade route.” (From WSJ’s Byron Tau) http://bit.ly/2jwY9SS
Overheard: “Make America Marginally Better in Some Regards…” (From The Blaze’s Leigh Munsil) http://bit.ly/2jH5dOM
Hats, hats, hats: You couldn’t swing a bat anywhere downtown without hitting a “Make America Great Again” hat.
But not everyone got the Trump swag memo: “Not all DC street vendors have converted apparel to Trump.” (From The Huffington Post’s Jennifer Bendery” http://bit.ly/2jHGuu8

LEADERS AND LAWMAKERS:
Ugh, handshake vs. hug miscommunication is the most awkward: Barack and Michelle Obama greeted Donald and Melania Trump this morning. Melania went in for a handshake, but Michelle wanted a hug. Cringe-worthy video: http://bit.ly/2jHfw5W
Spotted: “Indicted ex-Rep. Michael Grimm, up by the marching band taking a video.” (h/t Politico’s Rachael Bade) http://bit.ly/2kaMXhG
Poor Kellyanne Conway: There have been lots of tweets making fun of her outfit. http://bit.ly/2jUTE4f

IT’S LIKE GOING TO YOUR EX’S WEDDING: Hillary Clinton is under a microscope at inauguration today. This line says it all: “Watchful cameras are set to catch any reflexive moment of pain or frustration on Clinton’s face as she watches a man whom she plainly disdains sworn into the nation’s highest office — a job she had been favored to win.” I hope she’s been practicing her poker face. http://bit.ly/2jGE26I
Clinton tweets!: “I’m here today to honor our democracy & its enduring values. I will never stop believing in our country & its future.” http://bit.ly/2k8NHA7
