Event planners seeking an incomparable view of Washington for their guests can find it at the Hay-Adams Hotel. The hotel overlooks Lafayette Square and has long been one of the capital’s most popular gathering spots.
The White House, Washington Monument, St. John’s Church —known as “the church of presidents” — and scenic Lafayette Park fill the surrounding panorama. Patrons, who for their stay are essentially the president’s next door neighbors, can see all these landmarks from the bedroom balconies.
{mosads}The Hay-Adams is in the Italian Renaissance style but was originally built to be a residential hotel in the 1920s. These days, though, it hosts an array of events including weddings, banquets, social gatherings, business receptions, conferences, intimate dinners, formal meetings and more. National monuments and museums are within easy walking distance.
Jennifer Elena, vice president of Crosby-Volmer International Communications, a public relations firm representing the Hay-Adams, recommends that people interested in holding an event at the hotel go to visit it first. It is difficult to convey its luxurious atmosphere in words, she says; you have to be there to get it.
“I encourage them to take the time to stop by and meet with us so they can experience the ambiance, quiet elegance and rich history of the Hay-Adams. This is very hard to convey over the phone,” she said. “We want them to see the indescribable view from our roof terrace and know they must have their event here. Most groups select the Hay-Adams because it is so unique and truly represents Washington.”
The Rooftop Terrace is one of six main meeting areas. It is ideal for social events and receptions. Its 3,000-square-foot deck can accommodate some 225 people. Its stunning panoramic view makes it one of the most sought-after venues in the city; it’s a favorite spot from which to view July 4 fireworks over the National Mall.
But there are other meeting rooms that are suitable for other occasions. The Concorde Room is 650 square feet and seats as many as 50 people. It is known for its hand-painted wallpaper depicting a Tuscan landscape from the 18th century. This, and the window view out over St. John’s help create an outdoor atmosphere. It is fitting for dinners as for formal meetings.
The Lafayette restaurant is one of the federal capital’s power dining sites. Modern American cuisine is served in an opulent atmosphere. Sunlight streams in through the south-facing windows that also offer a view across the park to the White House. With nearly 2,000 square feet, the Lafayette seats up to 120 people.
The hotel has 144 guest rooms, including 21 suites of 500-1,000 square feet. There are special-offer packages for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and honeymoons.
The average event at the Hay-Adams is for about 100 people. The hotel employs about 40 people, including chefs and kitchen staff, a catering manager, guestroom coordinator, banquet staff, front-door staff.
“So many individuals are necessary to make sure an event is run smoothly and successfully, and excellent communication is key,” Elena says.
“Many guests enjoy dinner in our dining room and then celebrate while watching the fireworks from our roof terrace while waiters pass gourmet ice cream and cocktails, and red, white and blue flavors for the children,” she said. “Last year, Uncle Sam himself greeted the guests. After all my years in Washington, I think this is the best way to enjoy the Fourth of July festivities.”
The Hay-Adams author series is another way to keep the history of the Hay and Adams families included in present-day culture, Elena said.
“The authors are each unique and provide wonderful stories and readings,” she said. “Recently, we featured Maya Angelou and even created a customized cake to match her book cover. Ms. Angelou loved the mosaic design, and the extra attention to detail made for a memorable event.”
