Sanders-backed candidate wins NY House primary

A law professor backed by Bernie Sanders is projected to win the Democratic primary for a New York House seat.

Zephyr Teachout, a former New York gubernatorial candidate, defeated Livingston town Councilman Will Yandik.

{mosads}Teachout, a progressive firebrand, was endorsed by Bernie Sanders and picked up many endorsements from influential Democrats in the district.

In November she will face John Faso, who on Tuesday night was projected to win the Republican primary for the same seat.

Faso, a former state Assembly minority leader, won a bruising primary against businessman Andrew Heaney, who tied himself to Donald Trump.

Heaney tried to cast his opponent as a political insider, but Faso consolidated support from most of the local GOP county committees and from the state’s Conservative Party.

Faso and Teachout will face off for the right to replace Rep. Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.) in New York’s 19th district, in the Hudson Valley.

The seat is considered a toss-up. President Obama won the district in both 2008 and 2012.
