Hillary Clinton on Friday published a tribute to the feminist website The Toast on the day the site is closing.
Clinton compared the site to a tradition started by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) in which women of the Senate would gather for dinner parties.
{mosads}“Over a glass of wine — okay, maybe three — we’d give each other support, advice, and highly relevant tips to navigate being in such an extreme minority,” Clinton said of the parties.
“I’ve always had great admiration for women like Barb who take it upon themselves to create spaces where women can speak their minds freely. With this site, [creators Nicole Cliffe, Mallory Ortberg or Nikki Chung] did the same for so many women — and they made us laugh and think along the way.”
Clinton noted at least two former contributors to The Toast work for her campaign.
A campaign staffer confirmed to The Hill that the piece was written by Clinton.
The Toast rarely delved into political policy, focusing largely on humor essays on literature, art and culture.
Cliffe said in an editor’s note accompanying the piece that Clinton’s team reached out to The Toast:
“This is not a joke. Hillary’s team had talked to me a few weeks back about doing something, but I didn’t want to do, like, a ‘If Hillary Were Your President’ type thing, and then they got in touch on Wednesday and said she wanted to write something HERSELF (it seems her people show her Two Monks or what-have-you on long campaign days) and I said only if it was funny and they said ‘she was thinking more heartfelt?’ and here we are.”
The Toast’s creators announced in May that they would be closing the site July 1, citing declining revenues and a desire to focus more on their writing careers than managing the site.
