President Obama is celebrating July Fourth with a concert starring rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer Janelle Monáe.
The president and first lady Michelle Obama will welcome military heroes and their families for the holiday event, the White House announced Friday.
{mosads}The Independence Day celebration also includes a barbecue and a view of the fireworks from the White House’s South Lawn. Obama will speak at the event, which also includes staff, administration officials and their families.
The president has repeatedly voiced admiration for Lamar, even dubbing the artist’s “How Much a Dollar Cost” his favorite song of 2015. He also welcomed the rapper for a private Oval Office meeting last October.
“He was a little nervous – bless his heart, he’s really a very nice young man, and the president said, ‘Can you believe that we’re both sitting in this Oval Office?’” Obama’s senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said earlier this year of the meeting.
The White House also celebrated the rapper’s Grammy victories last February, praising him for “working to build a better future.” Lamar, 28, won five Grammys, including Best Rap Album for 2015’s “To Pimp a Butterfly.”
Monáe, meanwhile, is also no stranger to White House.
She has previously played there and helped Obama on initiatives including voter registration and ObamaCare enrollment.
Monáe, 30, said in January she is “really sad” the Obama era is ending.
“I love them and am always going to support them even after they leave,” she said of the first family on Jan. 14.
“I think when President Obama came into office, he basically pretty much did everything he said he was going to do and more, if we want to go down the list of things.”
