Sierra Club: Trump would be only global leader to not believe in climate change

If elected president, Donald Trump would be the only world leader to doubt the science behind climate change, according to a Sierra Club study released Tuesday.

The environmental group — which has endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton for president — released a report collecting statements from 195 heads of state showing their acceptance of climate change science and, often, their push to address the issue.

{mosads}The study includes leaders with well-known positions on climate change, such as French President Francois Hollande and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Every nation recognized by the State Department is included in the list as well. It notes, for example, that even North Korea signed the Paris climate deal agreed to last year.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has said he doubts the science on climate change, and the group notes he once called it a hoax invented by the Chinese. That’s despite his past statements in favor of work on climate change.

“Every single leader on earth – from Germany to India to Somalia to Japan – recognizes that the climate crisis is happening and demands the world’s attention, but Trump is sticking his head in the sand while the seas are rising,” Sierra Club Global Climate Policy Director John Coequyt said in a statement.

President Obama has focused on building international cooperation on addressing climate change.

Trump has said he would cancel the Paris climate deal and set terms better for the United States. He has also made reviving fossil fuel industries a major point of his campaign.
