Activists to deliver petition urging Trump to release tax returns

Activists on Tuesday will deliver a petition signed by more than 400,000 people urging presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

At an event outside Trump Tower in New York, leaders of liberal-leaning groups and community members will press Trump to make his returns public. Speakers will include representatives from Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund and The Patriotic Millionaires.

{mosads}Democrats have suggested that Trump is trying to hide something by refusing to release his returns. Some Republicans, including 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have also said that Trump should release his returns.

Trump has said that he will release his returns once the IRS is finished auditing him, but the agency has said that an audit does not prevent taxpayers from releasing their own information.

Activists at the event are also expected to criticize Trump for putting forth a tax plan that cuts taxes for wealthy people and corporations. His tax plan would cut the top individual tax rate from 39.6 percent to 25 percent and reduce the corporate rate from 35 percent to 15 percent.

“Donald Trump openly admits that he does everything he can to exploit the system to make more money, from making political contributions intended to curry favor to funding lobbyists and accountants who exploit every potential loophole in the tax code,” Patriotic Millionaires Chair Morris Pearl said in a news release.

“Furthermore, it is ridiculous that Mr. Trump is proposing a tax plan in which wealthy people who invest in real estate and other markets will pay even lower taxes than they do now, all at the cost of regular Americans.”
