RNC chairman: Trump never doubted Pence

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday that Donald Trump never doubted picking Mike Pence as his running mate, countering media reports.

{mosads}His heart “was in the Pence pick, and it has been in the Pence pick for quite a while,” Priebus said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

He called reports that claimed Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was trying to get out of picking the Indiana governor as a running mate inaccurate.

“That really was just not where Trump was at. I spoke to him multiple times that day,” Priebus said.

Pence said previously that Trump asked him to be his running mate Wednesday, but on cable news shows Trump on Thursday was still saying he was undecided.

Priebus said Trump was just frustrated about leaks within his campaign about the announcement.

“He wanted to keep people guessing. He wanted to make it more suspenseful, and the fact that everything was going down and people were talking — I think that frustrated Donald Trump,” Priebus said.

Priebus also praised Pence, saying the selection shows Trump is maturing and pivoting toward the general election.

“I thought it was a great pick. I think it’s a good juxtaposition of Donald Trump. I think it’s a different personality. They don’t agree with each other on everything, which actually shows maturity and a pivot to the general election.”
