Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday said Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick will help the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s chances in the general election.
“He shores up another part of our party,” Priebus said on “Fox News Sunday,” referring to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
{mosads}Pence is a staunch social conservative and a devout evangelical Christian who signed a controversial religious freedom law.
In response to a question about whether Pence could help the party reach out to socially moderate voters, Priebus remained confident that the Indiana governor would be an asset in appealing to more voters.
“I think Donald Trump and Pence are somewhere in the middle of each other,” Priebus said.
“So I think bringing Pence on board ends up shoring up a piece that Donald Trump needed to shore up.”
Priebus also said he thinks Trump will “expand the map.” He said Trump understands he needs to grow the party and thinks the party will be able to “flip” a few states to win.
