Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) early Tuesday criticized Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) for the Democrat’s plans to testify against his colleague, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), during his confirmation hearing to be President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general.
“Cory Booker is all about the latest stunt,” Collins, a member of Trump’s transition team, said on CNN’s “New Day.”
“If you remember what he did when he was mayor in New Jersey. The first thing he does is he tries to grab international headlines. What he’s doing today, never done before in the Senate. I mean it’s not surprising at all that Cory Booker’s the one pulling this off.”
{mosads}Booker said Monday he does not “take the decision lightly” to testify against a fellow senator, but he believes Sessions’s positions on a myriad of issues are “deeply troubling.”
Booker will be the first sitting senator to testify against a colleague during a confirmation hearing.
Collins said Booker is being “self-serving,” dismissing it is as an effort to grab the headlines.
He also expressed confidence in Sessions, praising him as a “constitutionalist” and a “conservative.”
“Jeff Sessions as a senator I think in the last go-around was the only senator of the United States that didn’t even have an opponent. That’s how much he is loved by the people of Alabama,” Collins said.
“And so the Q and A is going to occur, and I can assure you Jeff Sessions is going to answer the questions.”
Collins said Sessions places the Constitution “first and foremost.”
“And Cory Booker should be asking the questions like senators have done for decades,” Collins said.
“Not pulling a stunt like he’s doing.”
