Authorities have detained Rakim Mayers, better known as rapper A$AP Rocky, in connection with a November 2021 shooting.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that authorities arrested the “Peso” singer after he arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
According to NBC News, the LAPD arrested the rapper with assistance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations team.
Mayer, 33, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon by authorities.
LAPD says that a victim told them that the rapper, along with two other individuals, approached him with a visible firearm on the night of November 6, NBC News reported. According to police records, the victim said Rocky fired three to fours shots at him, with one of the bullets grazing his left hand.
“On November 6, 2021, around 10:15 p.m., an argument between two acquaintances occurred in the area of Selma Avenue and Argyle Avenue, in the Hollywood Area. The argument escalated and resulted in the suspect firing a handgun at the victim,” LAPD said in its statement. “The victim sustained a minor injury from the incident and later sought his medical treatment. Following the shooting, the suspect and two additional males fled the area on foot.”
“Detectives worked diligently to investigate and corroborate the reporting information which helped identify the suspect(s) involved,” the statement added. “The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Rakim Mayers, a Los Angeles resident, also known as music artist A$AP Rocky.”
This isn’t the first time A$AP Rocky has run into trouble with law enforcement.
Mayers, a member of Harlem, N.Y.-based hip-hop collective A$AP Mob, was arrested by Swedish authorities in 2019 after getting into an altercation with two individuals who were harassing him and his entourage.
Former President Trump publicly pushed for his Swedish counterparts to release the rapper from detainment, also offering to post the rapper’s bail as well.
Rocky and his girlfriend, pop music star and fashion mogul Rihanna, are currently expecting their first child together, having announced her pregnancy earlier this year.
The Hill has reached out to Mayer’s attorney for comment and more information.
