Giffords: Las Vegas shooting is a ‘grave tragedy for our nation’

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) called Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas a “grave tragedy” for the country.

“Heartbroken by the scene our nation is waking up to this morning,” Giffords wrote on Twitter. “No person should endure the horror Las Vegas experienced last night.”

Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman who killed six people and wounded 18 others in an attack on a “meet and greet” for the congresswoman in a supermarket parking lot.

She has since become an advocate for anti-gun violence causes. She started an anti-gun nonprofit, Americans for Responsible Solutions, in 2013.

The shooting in Las Vegas occurred about 10 p.m. Sunday night, when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a country music concert. The suspected gunman, who is now dead, was identified as Nevada resident Stephen Paddock, 64. At least 58 were killed and 500 injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
