WATCH: GOP rep: ‘You are not going to see government shut down’ 

A key GOP lawmaker predicts the government will stay open for business despite the “drama at the end of the year” of a possible shutdown.

“There’s a lot of discussion about (funding the government). … When it all comes down to it, you are not going to see the government shut down,” Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) said in an interview with The Hill.

Roskam is one of the House members appointed to the tax bill conference committee and said that Congress is trying to separate government funding and tax discussions so that tax reform does not get interrupted.

“I think what you will see is tax reform get signed into law by the president,” Roskam said. “We’re trying to separate out these two issues so that discussions around end-of-year drama don’t interrupt tax reform.”

Current government funding for fiscal 2018 runs out Friday at midnight. Lawmakers emerged from a conference meeting Tuesday morning indicating that leaders are leaning toward a two-week continuing resolution.
