A GOP lawmaker says Congress should take care of a must-pass spending bill before trying to deal with an impasse over immigration policy.
“I would not favor putting any immigration attached to the omnibus,” Rep. Steve Russell (R-Okla.) says in an interview with The Hill.
“They call it an omnibus because it is ‘omni’ — it’s got so much piled on — a little less spaghetti and meatballs on the plate, please,” Russell says.
In order to avoid a third government shutdown this year, Congress must pass the massive funding bill by Friday.
Lawmakers have discussed including in the bill a fix to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program but haven’t been able to agree on a deal.
Russell says Congress needs to “focus” on paying the bills, “and then let’s take up immigration policy at face value instead of, you know, having to swallow all the noodles and the meatballs with everything.”
