President Trump’s full pardon of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby sends a message to others caught in the crosshairs of a special prosecutor that they could also get a pardon, say several Democratic lawmakers.
“Clearly the president is trying to send a message to all co-conspirators that he’s willing to pardon almost the most serious crimes,” Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) said in an interview with The Hill.
Fellow Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks (N.Y.) said “it seems to me that the president could be sending others a message: ‘I’m going to take care of you.’”
GOP lawmakers, including Reps. Roger Williams (Texas) and Peter King (N.Y.), called Libby’s pardon overdue.
“It’s a validation of the service Scooter Libby gave this country and also a rebuke of the abuse of a special prosecutor,” King said.
