Emmys moved to January amid writers strike

The Emmy Awards will be once again pushed back to January 2024 due to the ongoing actors and writers strikes. 

The Television Academy, along with Fox Television, announced Thursday that the 75th prime-time Emmy Awards will air on FOX network Jan. 15, 2024, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The prime-time Emmy Awards were slated to air Sept. 18, but it was postponed by the association last month.

This year marks the first time the annual awards have been postponed since 2001, when the 9/11 terrorist attacks resulted in the show airing in November of that year.

The latest delay is due to the ongoing strikes by the actors union SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America (WGA). 

SAG-AFTRA, a union that represents more than 160,000 members, voted to strike last month after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed. The union is seeking better wage increases and working conditions for its members. 

WGA, a union that represents more than 11,000 professionals in the entertainment industry, launched its strike earlier this year in an effort to get better compensation for content produced for streaming services. 

The ongoing strikes are taking a toll across the industry, with actor Billy Porter telling British media outlet Evening Standard that he had to sell his house due to the work stoppage.
