Reuters clarifies premature report on Georgia Trump indictment

The wire service Reuters is clarifying a report it published Monday that indicated former President Trump had been indicted in Georgia in connection with his efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

The report, which came as a grand jury meets in Fulton County to hear evidence in the case, was widely circulated on social media and prompted the court to issue a statement shooting it down.

In a clarification posted online shortly after, Reuters said the court’s website briefly posted a document Monday listing several criminal charges against Trump, “before taking the document down without explanation.”

The document was dated Aug. 14, the wire and news service said, noting the document named Trump and cited the case as “open.”

“Reuters was not immediately able to determine why the item was posted or removed,” the outlet wrote on its website.

Anticipation of a Georgia indictment has grown massively in recent weeks after the county’s District Attorney Fani Willis (D) indicated that her office’s work on the matter was “accomplished.” The grand jury in the case typically meets Mondays and Tuesday, but the exact timing of an official indictment remains unknown.

If Trump were to be indicted in Georgia, it would be his fourth criminal indictment this year. The former president also faces criminal charges in New York, Florida and Washington, D.C., relating to his business dealings, handling of classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
