8-year-old boy is first reported death from Dorian as storm barrels toward US

The first death from Hurricane Dorian was reported Monday by two news outlets in the Bahamas.

Eyewitness News and Bahamas Press are both reporting that an 8-year-old boy died as the Category 5 storm bashes the island.

{mosads}The boy’s grandmother, Ingrid McIntosh, told Eyewitness News that her grandson died on Abaco island. She said her daughter found his body.

“I just saw my grandson about two days ago,” she said. “He told me he loved me. He was going back to Abaco. He turned around and said, ‘Grandma, I love you.'”

Bahamian authorities have yet to confirm the death.

Dorian has strengthened significantly as it has passed over the Bahamas.

The storm missed Puerto Rico and the southern part of Florida but is now bearing down on portions of the Eastern Seaboard.

The National Hurricane Center warned Sunday evening that strong winds are expected to affect the Carolinas and Georgia early this week.

The governors of South Carolina and Georgia have ordered evacuations, while North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) has declared a state of emergency.
