16 killed when ship carrying migrants sinks near Greece
At least 16 people died when a boat carrying migrants capsized near the Greek island of Paros, Reuters reported Saturday.
Eighty people were believed to be on the ship, which according to the Greek coastguard was making its way from Turkey to Italy.
The cause of the ship sinking is not known.
The stretch of the Mediterranean near Greece is one the major pathways for migrants seeking to make their way to Europe from the Middle East and North Africa.
The disaster Friday was the third this week involving migrants in the region.
Greek authorities earlier Friday announced they had recovered 11 bodies from a shipwreck, according to Reuters.
Earlier in the week a boat sank off the island of Folegandros. Many are missing from that accident.
