Obama: No guarantee BP attempt will work
President Barack Obama warned Wednesday there are “no guarantees” BP’s latest
attempt to plug the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico will work.
Obama, speaking in Fremont, Calif., said if the “top kill” plan does not work,
there are other “approaches that might be viable.”
{mosads}The leaking well is becoming a larger political problem for
the administration as oil continues to spill into the Gulf of Mexico from an
oil rig explosion 37 days ago. Obama is headed to the gulf on Friday for a
second time.
The “top kill” approach involves trying to plug the leak by
pumping thousands of barrels of very dense mud into the well.
The president on Wednesday reiterated that he has his top scientists and engineers
working to stop the leak.
“We’re going to bring every resource necessary to put a stop to this,” Obama
said.
The president is set to unveil on Thursday the
findings and recommendations of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s 30-day review
of offshore drilling safety before his visit to the Gulf on Friday.
Obama lamented the environmental damage that has already been done from the
spill, and pledged his support for a massive clean-up effort.
“We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired and
the clean-up is complete,” Obama said.
