Biden headed to Connecticut for fundraisers

Vice President Biden will head to Connecticut on Wednesday for a pair of fundraisers to help incumbent Gov. Dan Malloy, who is facing a tough battle to retain his job.

The vice president will attend an afternoon fundraiser benefiting the Democratic Governors Association at a private home in Greenwich, Conn., the White House said Tuesday.

{mosads}Later that evening, he’ll attend another event for the Democratic Party of Connecticut.

Both fundraisers are expected to be closed to the press.

Malloy barely bested Republican challenger Tom Foley in 2010, prevailing by only half a percentage point.

A New York Times/CBS News poll released last month showed Foley with a lead of 7 percentage points over the incumbent governor.

Malloy and Biden have worked together to push for stricter gun laws in the aftermath of the 2012 Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting, which left 26 children and educators dead.

“Our state became the center of a national debate after a tragedy we never imagined could happen here,” Malloy said at an event with Biden in 2013. “We have changed. And I believe it is now time for our laws to do the same.”

Connecticut ended up passing a comprehensive gun-control law that broadened the definition of assault weapons, banned the sale of high-capacity magazines and mandated background checks on all firearm and ammunition purchases.
