Obama: I’d ‘enjoy a Kentucky bourbon with McConnell’

President Obama said Wednesday he “would enjoy a Kentucky bourbon” with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the incoming majority leader of the Senate.

In comments a day after Democrats lost their Senate majority, Obama cast McConnell as a man he could work with.

{mosads}He said McConnell had always kept his word with him and always delivered on his promises.

And he said that with Republicans gaining power in the Senate, he’d be happy to have a drink of Kentucky’s favorite spirit with McConnell.

“You know, I would enjoy having some Kentucky bourbon with Mitch McConnell,” Obama said.

Obama said he is “certainly going to be spending a lot more time” with McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) now since that will be the only way to “get some stuff done” with the GOP majority.

Obama’s comments are a change for the president, at least if you consider his comments at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner last year.

“Some folks still don’t think I spend enough time with Congress. ‘Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?’ they ask,” Obama said. “Really? Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell? I’m sorry. I get frustrated sometimes.”
