Obama calls winning NCAA basketball coaches
President Obama phoned the coaches of the Duke University men’s basketball team and the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to congratulate them on their victories in the NCAA championship tournaments.
Obama told Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski on Wednesday he was inspired that a group of underclassmen helped lead the team throughout the March Madness tournament, according to the White House.
{mosads}Duke defeated the University of Wisconsin 68-63 on Monday, giving Krzyzewski his fifth national title.
The president congratulated Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma for turning the Huskies into a “sports powerhouse.” Under Auriemma’s leadership, the school has won 10 women’s national titles, including the last three in a row.
Obama accurately predicted the women’s title result, picking Connecticut over Notre Dame. But he picked the University of Kentucky men’s team to win.
Both teams will visit the White House to celebrate their championship victories.
