Obama orders flags at half-staff for Baton Rouge police officers

President Obama has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until Friday to honor the police officers shot and killed over the weekend in Baton Rouge, La. 

{mosads}American flags at the White House, public buildings around the country, and military and diplomatic posts around the world will fly at half-staff until sunset on July 22, according to a presidential proclamation issued Monday. 

Flags were already at half-staff to mourn the victims of last week’s terrorist attack in Nice, France, which left 84 people dead. The order was set to expire on Tuesday. 

When the flag is raised on Friday, it will have flown at half-staff on 15 of July’s first 22 days. The flags were also lowered for five days starting on July 8 in honor of the victims of the Dallas police shooting.  

It’s a sign of the frequency of the tragedies Obama has been forced to confront over the past several weeks. 

Obama has issued a record 69 proclamations lowering flags at federal buildings, according to a count kept by USA Today. 

Three officers were killed and three others wounded when a gunman ambushed on them Sunday in Baton Rouge. The alleged shooter, Gavin Long, was a black man and a Marine veteran.

The shooting came on the heels of the death of Alton Sterling, who was shot dead by police in the Louisiana city on July 5. The incident is under federal investigation.
