Conway: Meryl Streep ‘inciting people’s worst instincts’

Incoming White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said Monday that Meryl Streep’s criticism of President-elect Donald Trump at the Golden Globes is “inciting people’s worst instincts.”

“We have to now form a government and I’m concerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep is also I think inciting people’s worst instincts when she won’t get up there and say, ‘I didn’t like it but let’s try to support him and see where we can find some common ground with him,’” Conway said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

During the Sunday night awards show, Streep recalled Trump’s mocking of disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski. The actress did not mention the president-elect by name.

{mosads}“It was that moment, when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter — someone he out-ranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back,” Streep said. “It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie; it was in real life.”

Conway said Streep could have mentioned the mentally disabled Chicago teen who was tortured last week on Facebook Live. 

“I didn’t hear her even use her platform last night to give a shout out to the mentally challenged boy who last week was tortured live on Facebook for half an hour by four young African-American adults who were screaming racial and anti-Trump expletives and forcing him to put his head in toilet water,” Conway said.

Trump in a tweet early Monday called the award-winning actress “overrated,” saying he never “mocked” the reporter.
