Boehner endorses DeVos for Education secretary

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is endorsing President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to run the Department of Education.

In an opinion piece posted on his website Monday evening, one day before DeVos’s confirmation hearing in the Senate, he explained why he “strongly support[s] President-elect Trump’s choice of Betsy DeVos to serve as America’s next Secretary of Education.”

Boehner, a former House Committee on Education and the Workforce chairman, called DeVos “a successful business leader and entrepreneur with a passion for education reform,” who was “instrumental” helping him “establish and defend the first federal school choice initiative in America, the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (DCOSP).”

{mosads}“A champion for education reform, Betsy DeVos stood with us every step of the way, working side by side with me and many other proponents of equal opportunity in education to ensure the program continued,” he continued.

“Betsy DeVos understands the need for constant innovation in our education system,” Boehner said. “She knows that in order to ensure the next generation of Americans can compete and lead the world, we have to have an education system in which doors are open to continual improvement. “

Devos, a billionaire GOP donor, will face the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Tuesday, where her vocal support of school choice and charter schools is expected to face tough questioning.
