Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway defended the president-elect on Monday night, saying Donald Trump is everybody’s president.
When asked by Greta Van Sustren if the president-elect would “seek to resolve the rift” that’s opened between himself and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Conway said Americans should consider what’s been said over the past few days.
“Let’s review for everyone what was said, also, as we are reminding everyone and ourselves that Congressman Lewis is a civil rights and voting icon worthy of respect and his place in history, so no one can take that away from him,” she said.
{mosads}“At the same time, why use the word illegitimate to describe Donald Trump as our president? she asked.
“That’s just false. It’s regrettable.”
The president-elect sparked bipartisan backlash this weekend over his war of words with Lewis, after the civil rights icon said Trump was not a “legitimate president.”
In response, Trump tweeted that Lewis was “all talk” and “no action.”
Conway said Trump “would welcome a call from Congressman Lewis” to put the matter to rest.
“It’s a lot if you work at the Trump campaign, the Trump transition, the Trump White House,” she said. “Everybody’s always gunning for us.”
“This man was elected fairly and squarely. He is everyone’s president. He’s a legitimate president. You know who aggress with that? Barack Obama agrees with that, Hillary Clinton agrees with that.”
