Earnest: Trump tweets will ‘challenge’ Spicer
President-elect Donald Trump’s Twitter habit could make life difficult for his incoming spokesman, according to White House press secretary Josh Earnest.
“Yes, it will be a challenge,” Earnest told reporters early Wednesday at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
Earnest’s successor, Sean Spicer, has said he often does not receive a heads-up before the president-elect sends out his attention-grabbing tweets.
{mosads}Earnest said that could detract from Spicer’s core duties if Trump’s tweets are not in line with the message he is sending to the media.
“That has the potential to put Mr. Spicer in a difficult situation,” the outgoing press secretary said.
“The two most important responsibilities for the president’s spokesman are to be factual and to accurately reflect in as much detail as possible the thinking and perspective of the president of the United States,” he continued.
If the messages coming from Trump and Spicer are different, Earnest said, that could have negative consequences for “sensitive policy issues” and “policies that have bearing on our national security and our relationships with countries around the world.”
Spicer has defended Trump’s use of Twitter.
“Whatever he tweets, he is going to drive the news,” Spicer said at a University of Chicago panel earlier this month.
When asked by President Obama adviser David Axelrod if he has “a certain sense of dread” about Trump’s tweets, Spicer responded, “No, but I do look there first.”
