Rove: Trump should ‘end the compulsive tweeting’

GOP strategist Karl Rove says Donald Trump should stop using Twitter after the president-elect enters the White House.

“What voters tolerated during the campaign now seems inappropriate for a presidential transition and is likely to be thought unacceptable once Mr. Trump takes office,” Rove wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Wednesday. “As a candidate, he could punch down on lesser figures and comment carelessly on foreign leaders.”

“But if President Trump continues this in the Oval Office, he will lessen his stature, move markets, poison relationships and encourage adversaries to make political calculations,” Rove added.

He pointed to a Pew Research Center survey in December that found more than 8 in 10 respondents said Trump will need to be more cautious about his tweets.

{mosads}“The message?” Rove asked. “End the compulsive tweeting and, especially, the Twitter wars.”

Trump has repeatedly used his Twitter account against opponents ranging from critical lawmakers to antagonistic foreign leaders.

Critics argue, however, that the social media platform’s 140-character limit may be too simplistic for complex policy issues.

Trump declared in a Fox News interview released Tuesday that he dislikes Twitter but needs it as a defense against the media.

“Look, I don’t like tweeting,” he said. “I have other things I could be doing. But I get very dishonest media, very dishonest press. And it’s my only way that I can counteract.”
