Trump to host British PM in first foreign leader visit
Donald Trump will host his first foreign leader as president Thursday when he meets with British Prime Minister Theresa May at the White House.
Spokesman Sean Spicer confirmed the meeting Saturday during a statement to reporters.
Trump mentioned earlier in the day at the Central Intelligence Agency that he would soon host May.
The decision is a sign the new president wants to forge a close bond with his British counterpart.
{mosads}May has said she is seeking to broker a post-Brexit trade agreement with the U.S., an area of common ground with Trump, who backed the U.K.’s exit from the European Union.
Trump told the Times of London earlier this month he wants a U.S.-U.K. trade deal done “very quickly.”
Trump has also invited Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to visit the White House on Jan. 31.
The discussions are expected to involve immigration and trade.
Trump has repeatedly pledged to build a wall on the U.S. southern border and make Mexico pay for it.
He has also proposed slapping import tariffs on countries who move production to countries such as Mexico then sell goods in the U.S.
The president traveled to Mexico to meet with Peña Nieto during the 2016 campaign.
