Conway: People always expect Trump ‘to be the bigger man’

President Donald Trump’s aide Kellyanne Conway in an interview broadcast Sunday described the president as a “counter-puncher,” noting he very rarely initiates attacks.

“It’s when people attack him and then they wait to see what happens. ‘Let’s see what happens next,'” Conway said on “Sunday Today.”

“People expect him always to be the bigger man, always to be the only big man in the equation.”

But Conway said she thinks the president has the right to defend himself and “clear the record.”

“And I just think we should give him a chance in our great democracy to do wonderful things on behalf of all Americans.”

Conway cited John Brennan’s criticisms of Trump, questioning why the former CIA director had to go on a Sunday show while he was still in his role and attack the president.

In response, Trump questioned whether Brennan was the “leaker of Fake News.”

Conway said during the interview that aired Sunday that Trump knows he’s coming into office in a divided country.

“But Donald Trump did not divide the country,” she said.

“And the country is divided for many different reasons. But Donald Trump has a great opportunity to help unify and heal the country.”
