Trump: ‘We’re going to start renegotiating NAFTA’
President Donald Trump hinted as his early priorities Sunday afternoon, in East Room remarks before White House senior staff were sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump said that in addition to a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May, he plans to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he railed against during his campaign.
“We’re going to start renegotiating, having to do with NAFTA,” he said. “Anybody ever heard of NAFTA? We’re going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration and on security at the border.”
{mosads}He went on to praise Nieto, saying he’s “been terrific” and “really very amazing.”
Trump flew to Mexico during the campaign to meet with Nieto to discuss border security.
One of his campaign pledges was to build a wall, paid for by Mexico, along the southern U.S. border.
