Trump speaks with family of slain Navy SEAL

President Trump on Tuesday had a “very somber and lengthy” conversation with the family of a Navy SEAL recently killed during a raid of an al Qaeda facility in Yemen.

Over the weekend, Chief Special Warfare Operator William “Ryan” Owens, 36, became the first American killed in the years-long fight against al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch.

{mosads}“The president offered his sincerest condolences to Officer Owens’ wife, his father and their three children,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. “Chief Owens was on his 12th deployment, from what I understand. We could never repay the debt of gratitude we owe him, the freedom he fought for, and the sacrifice he made as well as the other members of his unit injured in this operation.”

On Saturday, SEAL Team 6 raided a headquarters for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, killing an estimated 14 al Qaeda members, according to U.S. Central Command.

In addition to Owens’s death, four other service members were injured in the raid.
