Christie called to DC for Tuesday lunch with Trump

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is reportedly meeting President Trump on Tuesday for lunch in Washington, D.C.

Christie and the president are scheduled to address several topics, including opioid addiction across the country, NJ Advance Media reported, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.

Christie’s wife, Mary Pat Christie, is also scheduled to attend the lunch.

A source told NJ Advance Media that Jared Kushner and Kellyanne Conway reached out to Christie to set up the meeting. 

{mosads}Christie was a strong supporter of Trump during his presidential campaign after the New Jersey governor ended his own bid for the White House. 

He was rumored to have been under consideration for the attorney general position in Trump’s cabinet, but was ultimately passed over for Jeff Sessions. The New Jersey governor said last year he turned down several offers to serve in Trump’s administration.

Christie previously led Trump’s transition team, but was ousted from the post and replaced by Vice President Mike Pence shortly after Trump’s November victory. 

During an interview Sunday, Christie said he doesn’t expect to be asked to serve in the Trump administration.

“I have absolutely no intention, nor any understanding, that I will be asked to be in the administration in the years to come,” Christie said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” 

“My view is, I have got a job to do as governor, and then my intention is to go off to the private sector and to help support my family.”

He said during the interview that he has been a friend of the president for many years, but said whether or not he talked with Trump will remain “between me and the president of the United States.”

The president told The Wall Street Journal during an interview last month that “at some point, we’re going to do something with Chris.”

A poll in late January found Christie had a 17 point approval rating among New Jersey voters, with 78 percent disapproving of his performance.
