Trump to address GOP donors in Florida: report

President Trump will head back to Florida next weekend to address major GOP donors during a retreat organized by the Republican National Committee, Politico reported Thursday.

The keynote address will be among Trump’s first attempts to ingratiate himself into the political fabric of the Republican Party establishment and its party-building efforts. During his presidential bid, the real estate mogul campaigned as a political outsider and often clashed with establishment Republicans.

Trump also spoke out against large donors on the campaign trail. He largely self-financed his primary campaign, later taking up traditional fundraising alongside the RNC after securing the party nomination. 

{mosads}“I understand that the Wall Street donors and the Washington insiders don’t want change,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Tampa, Fla., last August. “They want things to keep on going exactly as they are.”

“That’s why they are throwing their money at Hillary Clinton,” he continued. “It’s the powerful protecting the powerful.”

But the president has backed off of his heated attacks on donors and establishment politicians, and has appointed some to leading roles in his administration. Former RNC Chair Reince Priebus, for example, currently serves as Trump’s chief of staff. And Betsy DeVos, a longtime GOP mega-donor, is now secretary of Education.

Other top Trump administration officials are also expected to attend the retreat next weekend, Politico reported.

Trump has spent three weekends so far at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla. since taking office.
