Trump calls out Freedom Caucus leaders

President Trump on Thursday called out three members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, accusing them of torpedoing the Republican healthcare plan and holding up tax reform. 

In a string of tweets, Trump shamed the group’s chairman, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.); its former leader, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio); and Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho).

The president is stepping up the intraparty fight that broke out after the collapse of the GOP effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

Earlier Thursday, Trump threatened to back primary election challenger against Freedom Caucus members who opposed the American Health Care Act, a major defeat during his first 100 days in office. 

“The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!” he tweeted. 

Members of the hard-line conservative group, including Jordan, quickly returned fire. 

Jordan told Fox News the Freedom Caucus was trying to help Trump, “but the fact is you’ve got to look at the legislation. And it doesn’t do what we told the voters we were going to do, and the American people understand that. That’s why only 17 percent of the population supports this legislation.”

Attacking the Freedom Caucus won’t win @POTUS any plaudits from Dems; could alienate those R’s who stood by him when so many others ran.
