Trump hits media on Kansas congressional race coverage

President Trump late Sunday hit the media over its coverage of a Kansas congressional race.

“The recent Kansas election (Congress) was a really big media event, until the Republicans won,” the president tweeted.

{mosads}Republican Ron Estes last week overcame an unexpectedly tough challenge from civil rights attorney James Thompson (D) in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Mike Pompeo, Trump’s new CIA director.

Estes received 53 percent of the vote in Kansas’s 4th Congressional District, compared to Thompson’s 46 percent. Trump carried the district last November by 30 percentage points.

The president last week said the GOP had a “great win in Kansas” and falsely claimed the Democrats had “spent heavily” trying to flip the House seat.

The special election in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District has taken center stage recently as Democrats work to flip the red seat vacated by Trump’s new Health and Human Services secretary, Tom Price. Jon Ossoff is the Democratic front-runner in that race, while Republican Karen Handel leads several GOP challengers, according to recent polls. 

The Georgia election is a “jungle primary,” which pits all candidates against one another regardless of party. If none of the candidates receives a 50 percent majority, the two who received the two highest percentages of the vote advance to a runoff.
