The State Department informed Congress Tuesday that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear deal and that the United States will continue its ease of sanctions under the agreement.
President Trump has ordered a full review of the 2015 agreement, which he has repeatedly criticized as a failure of his predecessor, President Obama.
The State Department must update Congress on Iran’s compliance with the deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), every 90 days. It is the first such update under President Trump.
{mosads}“Notwithstanding, Iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror through many platforms and methods,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).
Tillerson said the National Security Council will lead a review of the deal “that will evaluate whether suspension of sanctions related to Iran pursuant to the JCPOA is vital to the national security interests of the United States.”
Under the agreement, the U.S. and other nations agreed to lift some sanctions on Iran in exchange for the country curbing its nuclear program.
