Warren on Trump treating her as 2020 competition: ‘Nonsense’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called it “nonsense” that President Trump’s team is reportedly treating her as potential competition for the next presidential election.

“I wish they would just settle down and do their jobs and stop doing this nonsense,” she said Friday night on MSNBC.

Warren was asked by host Chris Hayes what she thought of reports, such as the one published by The Hill, that the White House views her as a likely Democrat contender in 2020.

“I am out there doing my job every day. People of Massachusetts sent me to Washington to fight for working families and that is exactly what I am doing,” she added. “There is so much work that needs to be done in America for hard working families.”

Warren did not directly address the possibility of a run for the White House.

Warren’s aggressive criticism of Trump and the GOP has caused many to speculate that the lawmaker is preparing for a presidential campaign to challenge the sitting president.

In response to her heightened political profile, White House aides are keeping an eye on Warren and frequently issue immediate rebuttals to her attacks on the administration.

“As somebody who is probably, in the hearts and minds of liberal activists, a leader of the party, that voice carries some weight, and we have to respond,” one White House official told The Hill earlier this week.

“We don’t think ignoring her is the right approach,” the official added.
