Haley on Germany: ‘We have the backs of our allies’
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Tuesday fired back at Germany, assuring foreign partners that America has “the backs of our allies.”
“What I’ll tell you is Germany will see, in time, that we have the backs of our allies,” she said on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House.” “And all of our allies are starting to see that. So we’re going to continue to support our allies the way we always have.”
“And that’s our job. [It] is to show them that we’ve got their back and when the time comes, we need them to have our back as well.”
{mosads}Haley added that “there’s obviously some differences of opinion” between President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Merkel on Sunday said that Germany could no longer “completely depend” on the U.S. as a reliable partner.
“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out,” she said at a campaign rally in Munich. “I’ve experienced that in the last few days. [Europeans] must really take our destiny into our own hands.”
Merkel called climate talks with Trump last weekend “unsatisfying” after he declined to pledge his support for the 195-nation Paris climate agreement Saturday.
Trump earlier Tuesday criticized Germany in a tweet about its trade deficit with the U.S. and spending on NATO and the German military.
“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military,” he said. “Very bad for U.S. This will change.”
