Poll: Half support Trump travel ban

Half of likely voters support President Trump’s temporary ban on travelers to the U.S. from six Muslim-majority nations, according to a new poll.

Forty-one percent are opposed to the measure in the survey released Tuesday by the right-leaning Rasmussen Reports.

Pollsters also found 52 percent think Trump’s executive order is aimed at preventing terrorists from reaching the U.S., while 39 percent believe it is intended to target Muslims.

Tuesday’s results report that 50 percent think the Supreme Court is likely to uphold Trump’s ban despite lower courts previously blocking it.

Forty percent feel the Supreme Court is unlikely to uphold the ban, which impacts travelers from Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Trump tweeted Monday that the U.S. needs a “travel ban” in order to protect Americans from “certain dangerous countries.”

“That’s right, we need a TRAVEL BAN for certain DANGEROUS countries, not some politically correct term that won’t help us protect our people!” he said.

Legal experts say Trump’s call for a tougher version of the travel ban could undermine his administration’s efforts to reinstate the controversial policy, which has been put on hold.

Rasmussen conducted its latest survey of 1,000 likely voters via online and telephone interviews from June 4-5. It has a 3 percent margin of error.
