President Trump on Tuesday offered a cryptic message for fired FBI Director James Comey ahead of his highly anticipated testimony before Congress.
“I wish him luck,” Trump told reporters at the White House before a meeting with GOP congressional leaders.
The comments were Trump’s first public reaction to Comey’s decision to testify publicly about his interactions with the president.
During a Thursday hearing held by the Senate Intelligence Committee, the former director is expected to dispute the president’s claim that he personally assured him he was not under investigation.
{mosads}He is also expected to address reports that Trump urged him to drop a probe of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was fired for misleading administration officials about his interactions with Russian dignitaries.
The testimony could prove damaging to Trump, but he decided against using executive privilege to try to block Comey from speaking.
The president is scheduled to deliver a speech to the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington during part of the hearing Thursday morning, and aides haven’t ruled out the possibility he might use Twitter to respond to Comey’s claims.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer, however, would not say whether Trump would watch Comey’s testimony.
“The president is going to have a very, very busy day,” he told reporters.
