Christie: Trump’s exchanges with Comey and other officials ‘normal New York City conversation’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Wednesday said President Trump’s conversations with former FBI Director James Comey and other government officials constitute “normal New York City conversation.”

During an interview with MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” Christie argued that American voters “don’t understand” that in electing Trump they put “an outsider president” in the Oval Office.

“They elected someone who had never been inside government and quite frankly didn’t spend a lot of time interacting with government except at the local level,” Christie said of Trump.

{mosads}The governor’s interview came after the Senate Intelligence Committee released former FBI Director James Comey’s written testimony ahead of his Thursday appearance. Comey in his testimony described all of his interactions with Trump and noted that he wrote detailed memos immediately after speaking with the president, which he did not previously practice with former president Barack Obama.

The statement revealed that Trump asked Comey to help “lift the cloud” that the investigation into Russian election meddling had cast over his administration. In the statement Comey also confirms that the president asked him for his loyalty.

“The idea of the way the tradition of these agencies is not something he’s ever been steeped in,” Christie said.

“So I think over the course of time, we can talk about different examples, what you’re seeing is a president who is now very publicly learning about the way people react to what he considers to be normal New York City conversation.”
