‘No idea’ if there’s a recording system in White House, deputy press secretary says
White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday in an off-camera press briefing that she has “no idea” if President Trump may have used a recording system to document conversations with then-FBI Director James Comey.
Her answer came after former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, in which he said that he kept notes on his meetings with the president because he did not trust Trump to tell the truth about the meetings.
{mosads}Three days after firing director Comey, Trump posted a tweet that said, “Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”
“I’ve seen the tweet about tapes,” Comey said Thursday. “Lordy, I hope there are tapes.”
He also encouraged the president to release any tapes he may have.
“Release all the tapes,” he added, “I’m good with it.”
Comey’s testimony shed light on the possible motivations for his firing by the president, amid allegations of Trump attempting to stifle the FBI probe into his possible collusions with Russia.
