Mnuchin calls impeachment talks ‘biggest waste of time’

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday dismissed talk of impeaching President Trump, saying such calls are the “biggest waste of time.”

“Well Maria, let me just assure you — people talking about impeaching the president is the biggest waste of time,” Mnuchin told host Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business’ “Mornings with Maria.”

Mnuchin’s comments come after Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) submitted Monday a proposed article of impeachment for Trump for allegedly obstructing justice in the federal probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

Sherman is the second House Democrat, after Rep. Al Green (Texas), to speak about drawing up articles of impeachment.

{mosads}Green argues that Trump’s firing of then-FBI Director James Comey, amid the ongoing Russia probe, makes it an impeachment-worthy obstruction of justice case.

So far, most Democratic leaders have rejected the calls to impeach the president, maintaining their distance.

“We have to find out what the facts are,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

Mnuchin said the Democratic lawmakers calling for Trump’s impeachment should be prioritizing issues that would benefit the American people.

“They should be focused on what’s good for the American public, which is creating jobs. And that’s what we’re focused on, and that’s what we’re working on every day,” he told Bartiromo.

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic polling firm, found in its latest poll released Monday that almost half of registered voters, 47 percent, support Trump being impeached, while 43 percent of the polled voters oppose it.
