Poll: Comey trusted more than Trump to tell the truth

Voters trust former FBI Director James Comey to tell the truth more than President Trump, according to a new poll.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 45 percent of voters said they trusted Comey more to tell the truth, while 32 percent said they trusted the president more. Another 23 percent said they had no opinion.

The poll also found that 43 percent of voters thought Comey’s testimony last week before the Senate Intelligence Committee hurt Trump more than helped the president. Only 23 percent say the former FBI director’s testimony helped Trump more, and another 35 percent don’t know or have no opinion.

{mosads}A majority of Democrats, 58 percent, says the testimony hurt Trump more, compared to just 16 percent of Democrats who say it helped the president. Among Republicans, 36 percent say the testimony helped Trump more, compared to 28 percent who say it hurt the president.

Slightly more than half of voters said they watched part or all of Comey’s testimony. A majority, 53 percent, of voters said they think Comey is either very or somewhat honest.

Forty-five percent of voters approve of the job the president is doing, compared to 50 percent who disapprove. But among Republicans, 81 percent approve of the job Trump is doing.

The poll was conducted from June 8 to 12 among 1,990 registered voters. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.

Comey testified last week before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a highly anticipated hearing in which he said he believed he had been directed to end an investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Trump has disputed Comey’s recollection and said last week he is “100 percent” willing to give his own version under oath.
