Iran: Trump’s travel ban ‘racist’ and ‘unfair’

Iran on Wednesday criticized the Supreme Court’s decision reinstating parts of President Trump’s executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, a policy it calls “racist” and “unfair.”

Iranian state television quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi calling it “regrettable” that Washington “closes its eyes to the main perpetrators of terrorist acts in the U.S.,” according to The Associated Press.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could reinstate parts of the controversial order banning travelers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen until the court hears the case in the fall.

Trump lauded the Supreme Court’s decision as a major victory for his administration.

“Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security,” Trump said Monday. 

“Today’s ruling allows me to use an important tool for protecting our nation’s homeland,” he added. “I am also particularly gratified that the Supreme Court’s decision was 9-0.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also called the decision a victory for the separation of powers.

“Today’s order is also an important step towards restoring the separation of powers between the branches of the federal government. The Court’s decision recognizes that the Executive has the responsibility to protect the safety and security of the American people under the Constitution of the United States and its laws,” Sessions said in a statement.

Federal agencies are now scrambling to figure out how to implement a more limited version of Trump’s ban.
