Trump presses for resolution to Qatar dispute during call with Egyptian leader
President Trump in a call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday urged Egypt and other Mideast nations to resolve their dispute with Qatar amid the ongoing crisis.
“President Trump called on all parties to negotiate constructively to resolve the dispute, and he reiterated the need for all countries to follow through on their commitments at the Riyadh Summit to stop terrorist financing and discredit extremist ideology,” the White House said in a readout of the call.
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism, an allegation Qatar denies. The countries have blockaded Qatar, citing “long-simmering grievances.”
{mosads}Demands for lifting the blockade include cutting diplomatic ties with Iran, shutting down Turkey’s air base that is in Qatar and shutting down the broadcast network Al Jazeera.
Trump on Wednesday also spoke with Sisi about the need for cooperation from other nations to halt North Korea’s increased test-fire missile launches, according to The White House.
“President Trump stressed the need for all countries to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions on North Korea, stop hosting North Korean guest workers, and stop providing economic or military benefits to North Korea,” it said.
Trump spoke to Sisi while aboard Air Force One. The president is traveling to Poland and will attend the G-20 summit later this week, where he is expected to meet with foreign leaders to discuss the North Korean threat among other issues.
