Poll: Majority says Trump Jr. meeting inappropriate
A majority of voters in a new survey says Donald Trump Jr.’s decision to meet last year with a Russian lawyer was inappropriate.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 52 percent of registered voters think it was inappropriate for Trump Jr. to accept the meeting with the Russian lawyer, compared with just 23 percent who said it was proper.
Another 25 percent of respondents don’t have an opinion on the issue.
{mosads}Among Republicans, 44 percent say it was appropriate and just 24 percent disagree.
But a significant majority of Democrats, about 80 percent, thinks accepting the offer last year to meet with a Russian lawyer was inappropriate.
A majority of voters also thinks Trump Jr.’s meeting last year should be part of the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian election meddling.
Forty-six percent of voters said President Trump had been “not too truthful” or “not truthful at all,” while 41 percent think Trump has been “very” or “somewhat” truthful.
The poll was conducted from July 13 to 16 among 1,994 registered voters. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
News of Trump Jr.’s meeting last year has spurred controversy, with some lawmakers calling it a smoking gun in the Russia probe.
Trump Jr. last week released a chain of emails detailing his conversations about setting up the meeting with a Russian lawyer who he was told had compromising information on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
President Trump has since defended his son, saying most politicians would have taken a meeting like the one Trump Jr. attended.
