Poll: Those in Trump counties support president’s policies, oppose his style

Voters in “Trump counties” support many of President Trump’s policy proposals but don’t agree as much with his personal style, according to a new survey.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll of 439 key “Trump counties” in 16 states found three-quarters of Americans in counties that pushed Trump to the White House support the president’s vow to bargain with global companies to keep jobs in the United States.

Sixty-eight percent also stand with Trump on his openness to military action against North Korea if Pyongyang continues its behavior, and another 66 percent support his response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons.

Just about one-quarter support Trump’s use of Twitter to express his thoughts, and only 20 percent support the way he has dealt with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race.

Only 25 percent support Trump’s decision not to release his tax returns.

The poll also found that just 12 percent of Americans in the counties think the House GOP healthcare bill passed earlier this year is a good idea, compared with 41 percent who disagree. Another 47 percent have no opinion or are unsure.

Even among Trump voters, just 25 percent think the House GOP healthcare bill was a good idea, but another 59 percent had no opinion or were unsure.

The poll was conducted from July 8 to 12 among 600 adults in these counties. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
